Where to start – I am a girl with many phobias. But the ones I’m going to write about today are those in a similar category, those rooted in megalophobia (although it’s odd, I don’t have regular megalophobia, discomfort looking at certain images, yes, but not a big fear). I have megalohydrothalassophobia and a fear of large celestial bodies in outer space or the sky (excluding the moon, sun, and stars). The first phobia is not so bad because it’s not something I see or get reminded of in my day-to-day life, as where I live, there aren’t even any large bodies of water nearby. But the second one, which I don’t even know if there is a proper name for, is bad. I have had many nightmares of planets getting close to earth or seeing clusters of galaxies with the naked eye through the window or when stepping outside, etc. When I look at the sky, especially at night, I often imagine if those scenarios did happen, and I feel dizzy. I feel dizzy just when I search up and see images of things like giant nebulas. I have an irrational fear that if I randomly look up at the sky during the night, I will witness an anomaly that no one else would be seeing. I’m also scared of possibly seeing an asteroid passing by, narrowly missing us. I get a bad tingling sensation in my body, mainly concentrated in my legs. I feel like it’s a signal my brain is giving me to run, which makes sense as a big part of having a phobia is wanting to avoid the stimuli causing fear. Does anyone else have this somewhat specific fear of cosmic objects and such? Is astromegalophobia the name? I’m not sure what to label it, but that’s the only title I’ve seen given to this phobia when I looked it up.
